A Study On Construction "Zhidaode X, Buzhidaode Haiyiwei Y" Based On Relevance-blending Model

This thesis aims to analyze the sentence type “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y” incognitive point of view. Under the guidance of cognitive constructional grammar, this thesisexerts the new relevance-blending model which is based on the relevance theory andconceptual blending theory to find the meaning production mechanism of construction“zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y”.“zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y” sentence type is commonly used in current Chinese,however, scholars rarely pay their academic attention to this structure which has distinctivefeatures. Usually, people use it to express commendatory, pejorative, ironic, etc. attitudetoward the same event, for example:（1）知道的你们是母女俩，不知道的还以为是姐妹俩呢。（Micro Blogs）（2）知道的是拆迁，不知道的还以为是暴动呢。（CCL）In view ofits meaning, we collect84sentences in type of “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y”, andintentionally exclude sentences that only state the objective fact and deny the subjectivecognition, for instance:（3）掌管烤炉的罗大厨要摔扒子不干，原因是这次进的鸭子质量不好，而且不用好料烤鸭，知道的是鸭子不好，不知道的还以为是他的手艺潮，他丢不起这个人。（4）知道的是头儿关心我们，不知道的还以为是我们特战队不敢冒着敌人的弹雨冲锋呢！ In particular, this thesis mainly explores “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiweiy” sentence type with y imparting some extra meaning to x, treats it as a construction,abstracts its constructional meaning, identifies its classification, demarcates the enter criteriaof x and y, and probes deep into its meaning production mechanism in cognitive point ofview.In order to analyze the meaning production mechanism of construction “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y”, this thesis, first of all, treats it as a construction in accordance withGoldberg’s constructional grammar. On basis of this, constructional meaning is generalizedafter investigation into the data. Then, this thesis gets enlightenment from Fauconnier’sconceptual blending theory to classify and set enter criteria for construction “zhidaode x,buzhidaode haiyiwei y”. Last but not the least, this thesis integrates Fauconnier’s conceptualblending theory and Sperber&Wilson’s relevance theory into a new model to account for itsmeaning production mechanism. The points of integration include two aspects. One is thatcontext coming from communicative principle of relevance theory contributes to the selectiveprojection in conceptual blending theory. The other is that the optimal relevance presumptionobtaining from relevance theory devotes to the completion and elaboration in the blendingprocess. Finally, the relevance theory and conceptual blending theory concur to bring aboutthe emergent structure. That’s the relevance-blending model to analyze the meaningproduction mechanism of construction “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y”.By applying the working framework to construction “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiweiy”, we finally come to the following conclusions.Firstly,“zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y” as a construction has such constructionalmeaning: Through the contrast between objective fact and subjective cognition, someconversational implicature emerges from the subjective cognition part and is imparted to theobjective fact part. Under the premise of constructional meaning, we can work out themeaning production mechanism.Secondly, according to the organizing frame and conceptual integration network,construction “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y” is classified into two types: Mirror networktype and single-scope network type. To regulate sentences that can enter such construction,we find illumination in the division of conceptual integration networks and set the entercriteria: The first enter criteria is that if x and y belong to the same organizing frame, the contrast between the two should be salient. The second posits that if x and y belong to twodifferent organizing frames, the similarity between the two should be salient.Thirdly, relevance theory can complement the demerits of conceptual blending theory intwo ways: context which is fit for the optimal relevance presumption plays a role in selectiveprojection and the optimal relevance presumption helps avoid any deviation in completionand elaboration parts and finally help generate the emergent structure. In practice, theintegrated new model systematically demonstrates the meaning production mechanism ofconstruction “zhidaode x, buzhidaode haiyiwei y” and displays its strong explanatory power.
