The Study Of Samson In Judges Based On Morphology Of Folktale

In this research, I analyse Samson Story in Judges as a hebraic folktale consisted of fourstories. Using the Morphology of Folktale, I research the roles of the four stories, make clear thestory structure, and compare the differences between the arrangement of narrative function linesowned by the four stories and the arrangement of narrative function lines in the33folktale sortedout by Propp. Based on this, I analyse the features of the Samson story and regard it as a commonfolktale. The thesis divides into three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion.In the introduction, the study of the Samson story is mentioned. Then, I introduce thispaper’s researching significance and researching methods.The main body is consisted of four chapters:Chapter one takes a global view of Propp and his morphology of folktale theory. Thischapter divides into three sections. In the first part, I introduce the works of Propp. In the secondpart, I explain his morphology of folktale theory. In the third part, I discusse the feasibility ofmorphology of folktale theory in Samson story search.In the chapter two, function lines in the Samson story are analysed. In this chapter, thestory is divided into four sections. First sections: analysis of the birth of Samson, second: analysisof the story of Samson and Timnah, third: analysis of the story how Samson defeated Philistines,forth: the story of Samson and Dalilah.In the chapter three, I interpret the functional arrangement of the Samson story. This chapter is divided into two sections: in the first, based in the chapter two, the general and uniquefeatures of the function arrangement in Samson story are analysed; in the second section, I analysethe three phenomenon of the story.In the chapter four, based on the analysis in the chapter three, I interpret the roles in theSamson story. This chapter is divided into three sections: interpretation of the role of alien,interpretation of the role of Jehovah, interpretation of the role of Samson.In the finally part of this thesis, I make a systematic conclusion of the research. Basingon the theory of morphology of folktale, I not only expand the study of Samson story but alsodialectically discuss the Propp’s theory.
