With thepublication of Miss Sophie’s diary in1928, Ding Ling advent contemporary Chineseliterary world and shocked the whole world of literature and art.The studies on Ting Ling in American Sinology belong to the "ChineseContemporary Literary Study ", one of the categories of "Chinese research", and alsobelong to the western Sinology on an even grander scale. The studies on Ting Ling ofU.S. Sinologists could trace back to the1930s and has so far got enormousachievements. Due to the different studying perspectives, standpoints and methods,the studies on Ting Ling in American Sinology, also a new viewpoint from westernacademic world, present the characteristics of objectivity, transcendence andreflectivity. The discussion on Ting ling studies by American Sinologists is a researchmade by Chinese scholars again. The thesis aims to comb and summarize the studieson Ting Ling by U.S. Sinologists.From the macro perspective, we will concentrate on the general situation of thestudies on Ting Ling in American Sinology. This paper is to analyze differenthistorical periods of Ting Ling studies in American Sinology from the linear viewpoint. After the early stage, cool period and turning period, the studies on Ting Lingachieved new flourish in recent years. The scholars’ research achievements andcharacteristics in each period will also be summarized in this paper. From the microperspective, the paper is to explore the theory and method the U.S. sinologists used tointerpret Ting Ling’s creation and life. The majority of American Scholars probed intoTing Ling’s works mostly from the perspective of ideology, feminism, the thoughtand art and comparative literature even the view of psychology. Ideology is anaggregate of ideas. It is a very common phenomenon in the20th century that ideologycould influence even lead the literary writing and review. The researchers’ ideologyand standpoints they had before would also affect the research results. In the1980sthere was a great renewed upsurge in Ting Ling studies in American Sinology fromthe perspective of feminism. In a word feminism is to achieve equality between menand women. Plenty of American Sinologists analyzed Ting Ling’s life and works fromthe perspective of feminism, mainly focusing on the female consciousness reflectingin Ting Ling’s early creations and how Ting Ling’s female consciousness and revolutionary consciousness influenced her writing.
