The Belgium linguist Verschueren puts forward the Adaptation theory which interpretspragmatics with the rich significance of theory and the value of application from a newperspective. After some scholars introduced Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles into China, great attention is paid by many domestic scholars and therefore, lots of Chinese translationversions are appeared in which Zhang Guruo’s and Sun Fali’s translation versions are moresymbolic than any other version. As a result, in the framework of Verschueren’s Adaptationtheory, this thesis analyzes comparatively these two different Chinese translation versions ofTess of the D’Urbervilles. Its aim is, by means of studying translation phenomena and theirnature by contrast, to demonstrate the significance of guidance on the Adaptation theory aboutexplaining the translation reconstruction of literary works. In the framework of dynamic Adaptation theory, the comparative analysis of Zhang’sand Sun’s Chinese translation versions is made from four angles, that is, from the perspectivesof the contextual correlates of adaptability, the structural objects of adaptability, dynamics ofadaptability and the salience of adaptability. By means of the research about these twoChinese translation versions of Tess of the D’Urbervilles comparatively, two conclusions canbe drawn. One is that these two translators make the proper choices and adaptationsconsidering a variety of factors so as to obtain the perfect translation effect. The otherconclusion is that the Adaptation theory has a strong explanatory power in the field oftranslation.
