A Study Of60Minutes From The Perspective Of Cooperative Principle And Politeness Theories

Nowadays human communication becomes more and more frequent, so there are kinds of conversational forms. Under different conversational forms people use different politeness strategies. TV news Interview belongs to the special conversational form. Since1950s it has boarded on the western historical stage of mass communication, meanwhile it has been the most crucial component of mass media in all countries. In China, since1990s the news interview has played an important part in public communication. Predecessors had done a lot research about News Interview. They mainly studied it form journalism, and there are less experts study it from linguistics. So in this paper I choose60minutes as source object to analyze the host and guest’s conversation based on the Cooperative Principle and Politeness Theories.Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principles are the dispensable principles in human communication. Conversation is the ordinary communicational way in daily life. When they talk with each other, their different advantages produce the behavior of threatening face. Leech’s Politeness Principles explains the reason why people may disobey the CP, however he did not refer to the specific strategies. Brown and Levinson FAT theory makes up for the shortage to study deeply the polite phenomena. CP-. PP and politeness strategies complement and consummate the others. They establish a social theory foundation to research human conversation.This paper has collected15videos; they interview respectively leaders, amusement stars and ordinary heroes. When host interviews the different guests, they talk with each other with the appropriate conversational ways and adopting different politeness strategies. This paper mainly talks about four problems. First, host and guest how to convey information and attain information on the basis of Cooperative Principle. Second, sometimes host and guest how to convey their meaning euphemistically and analyze why they violate CP to convey their ideas indirectly. Third, which politeness strategies host and guest take to respect and look after the other’s face, meanwhile avoid making themselves awkward or making their relationship deteriorated. Forth, by analyzing the host and guest’s conversation I find that there are still some phenomena which CP and PP can not explain. On one hand I prove the rationality of CP and PP theories; on the other hand I prove the shortage of CP and PP theories. This paper does a specific analysis and research about CBS60minutes in order to prove Grice’s CP, Leech’s PP and Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies’ rationality, meanwhile it also discloses the limitation of explaining the conversational phenomena.From the perspective of practical meaning, this paper will help students study English, understand the foreign Interview programs and it has instructional significance for daily behavior and cross-culture communication.
