This thesis aims to approach Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain from theperspective of deep ecology, with its two ultimate norms of ecocentric equality andSelf-realization.Through the analysis of elements which carry deep ecological ideas in ColdMountain, such as the author’s narrative technique and character setting, hisintention to promote a life in which human beings can achieve equality with othernatural beings, and realize the true meaning of human life in symbiosis with wildexistences, is revealed. By means of textual analysis, this thesis approaches ColdMountain through the following aspects. Firstly, in terms of ecocentric equality,Charles Frazier’s employment of a two-line narrative technique is examined;sapiential life philosophies of different people in the story are interpreted; and thenatural knowledge and ecological ideology of Ruby are elaborated. Secondly, Inmanand Ada’s processes of transformation are progressively discussed in full, which isclosely related to the deep ecology concept of Self-realization.This thesis will dig out valuable deep ecological evidences in Cold Mountainand offer an analytical interpretation of them, thus introducing a new way of lookingat the work, and uncovering Charles Frazier’s advocation of equal and ecologicalvalues of life.
