| Reformist intellectuals in the late Qing and early Republic of China have ushered ina translation boom. As one of the best-sellers in this current, Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu has givenrise to plenty of responses during that period since its publication. However, as the aim ofLin Shu’s translation is to arouse the patriotic passion of the Chinese people, previousresearchers have mostly studied it from the ideological perspective and relativelyneglected Lin Shu’s classical writing skill, which is another significant reason for itspopularity. It can be said that Lin Shu’s translation theories and practices are deeplyinfluenced by traditional poetics, especially by poetics of the Tongcheng School. Thispaper makes an attempt to discuss how Lin Shu changes the poetic style of the original tosuccessfully attract feudal literati and intellectuals’ attention.From the perspective of rewriting theory, this thesis conducts a descriptive researchon the normalization of content and form in Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu. With explanations ofsuch poetic rewriting in this translation, the author attempts to reveal that "Yi Fa" of theTongcheng School has an impact on Lin Shu’s translation.This thesis focuses on three aspects: abridging excessive descriptions under themanipulation of "Yi Fa", which are featured by tedious descriptions of environment,scenes, characters as well as redundant explanations and comments; deleting andrewriting elements related to Christianity under the manipulation of "Yi Fa", whichinclude religious activities and diction, quotations from the Bible and religious hymns,religious spirit and influence and Christian principles; normalizing of form under themanipulation of "Yi Fa", which includes employing classical language, making thediction more formal and literary and adopting classical writing techniques characterizedby addition and cohesion techniques. The study on Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu is conducive to theresearch on the poetic characteristics in other translations of Lin Shu. |
