With the quick development of shipping industry, the international community has put forward higher demands on seafarers. Mastering Nautical English plays a critical role in improving the competitiveness of Chinese navigation majors. Analysis and discussion have been conducted regarding non-CET4words in NEC with high frequencies from the perspective of word formation by combining qualitative and quantitative measures. The data processed by computers show that there are five types of word formation in non-CET4words in NEC with high frequencies including derivation, abbreviation, compounding, clipping and blending. Derivation is the most frequently-used means of word formation, followed by abbreviation, compounding and clipping. Blending is the least used means of word formation among the five. And further analysis has been done on the features and collocations of words in each category of word formation. The findings of the thesis might help navigation majors or other people concerned to master Nautical English in an effective manner; at the same time, it would shed some light on Nautical English teaching.
