| English,as the lingua franca, plays an indispensable role in the frequent internationalcommunication. The globalization and nativization of English result in the emergence ofEnglish varieties, and the development of World Englishes theories lays the theoretical basisfor them. China English is such an English variety that originates from English nativization inChina. It takes the normative English as its core and Chinese cultural elements as its content.China English contributes to the spread of Chinese culture in the world also the prosperity ofthe English language. Many scholars have carried out relative studies on China English fromdifferent aspects, which have improved the development of China English. However,theoretical studies are much more than the exploration on the actuality studies. There is stillno agreed definition and certain standard for China English and more studies on its practicalvalues should be focused as well.China English is the outcome of intercultural communication, and it is bound to haveimpact on intercultural communication. English majors are the subjects in interculturalcommunication and the carriers for the improvement of China English. Therefore, it is ofprofound significance to explore the English majors’ awareness of China English and itsfunction for intercultural communication. Combining the relevant theories of interculturalcommunication, the author employs survey study, respectively in forms of questionnaire andinterview. Sixty third-year English majors from a university of Liaoning province wereselected as subjects. The study was made to investigate English majors’ awareness of ChinaEnglish and its function for intercultural communication and tries to find the clue that how isChina English related to English majors’ intercultural communication as well as Englishmajors’ attitudes toward applying China English in EFL teaching.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data, the following results arereached: First, most English majors are aware of China English as an objective Englishvariety and agree its positive significance to disseminate Chinese culture in interculturalcommunication, they attach importance to acquire China English and agree that ChinaEnglish promotes the global cultural influence of China. Second, most English majors agreethat China English are closely related to their communicative effects in interculturalcommunication. It has the function of raising native cultural awareness, enhancing nationaland cultural identity as well as promoting cultural empathy. Finally, English majors supportthat China English has application value to EFL teaching to improve interculturalcommunicative competence, and make them well-versed in both Chinese and Westerncultures under mutual cultural interaction. This thesis affirms that China English plays a positive role in intercultural communication,and discusses the necessity and possibility of acquiring China English of English majors. Itopens up a new method for cultivating bicultural English talents. |
