Nowadays, the world is developing at a top speed, the knowledge is renovatedfaster and faster, it takes short period for science and technology to be renovated byand by. With the popularization of higher education today, higher vocational collegestudents are about to occupy more than half of the number of students in highereducation. These students will be the backbone or mainstay in the future. Students’stronger competitiveness and developing of potential is largely depended on whetherthe students have the strong ability of autonomous learning. We are in the networkand information age, English teaching should adapt to the age. We can apply thetechnology of internet and computer in English teaching to enrich the teaching mode,improve the teaching level and create the teaching unique feature. With the guidanceof College English Curriculum Requirements-Higher Occupation Education Englishteaching should introduce the technology of internet, computer and other modernteaching means. We should build a teaching mode which adapts to the highervocational college students’ individuation learning and autonomous English Learning.Making full use of the Multimedia in the teaching will improve the teaching approachand strengthen cooperation and interaction learning. It will be good for leadingEnglish learning to the individuation learning and autonomous English Learning.The higher vocational college students’ English level is uneven. Most of them arenot good at English. Their English level and comprehensive ability are poor, theirautonomous English learning abilities are limited, but the most important reason whythey can’t learn English well is that they are disinterested in English. Although theyare not interested in English learning, they must learn English well, due to thepressure of getting a job so that they have to get the certificates of PRETCO-level A,level B and CET-4, so English is very important and necessary for them. In order toimprove their English marks, we must arouse their interest in English learning first.For this purpose, our school has already reformed in various aspects, including thetextbook, teaching method, teaching equipment and so on. First we change the oldtextbook into a new one-English Integrated Course, published by Higher Education Press, Higher Vocational English (Third Edition), the new book is colorful, every parthas its unique color in order to arouse the students’ interest, avoiding aesthetic fatigue.But after all, a book is only a single textbook, it is just paper and word and not livelyenough. Its inspiring function is limited, so we should change the teachers’ teachingmethods to arouse their interest. Second, we introduce the new teaching approach andadvanced equipment. Due to expansion, the student number of the class is bigger andbigger, teachers can not take care of all the students. It means that the students shouldhave a stronger autonomous learning ability if they want to learn well.In this thesis, the writer puts forward a view of teaching method-improving thestudents’ autonomous learning ability in the computer assisted instruction contexts. Inorder to apply this teaching method, the writer’s school equips every classroom withmultimedia tools. Multimedia teaching form is various and intuitive, the mostprominent feature of multimedia is that words with pictures and sounds can interestthe students. Teachers are able to give students the lifelike, vivid language learningand communication environment and fully mobilize the students’ variety of senses,such as listening, looking and so on. CAI can improve the students’ interest in Englishlearning and promote their learning efficiency in order to achieve the best teachingeffects. And the textbook is also equipped with CD in order to facilitate students’autonomous learning abilities, which suggests that the multimedia teaching serve animportant function that can not be ignored in English learning. In Multimedia teachingcontext, the development of higher vocational college students’ English autonomouslearning abilities has its theoretical basis, which fits the requirements in reform of thehigher vocational English teaching method. But this kind of teaching method shouldbe carried out under teacher’s guidance, after all, some students’ self-control abilitiesare poor, so we should build a "teacher-led, student-centered " teaching mode.This thesis adopts experimental research method and employs interactivelyquestionnaires and tests. It integrates the theories of constructivism and autonomouslearning. The writer also puts forward the view that how to induce, develop andcombine college students’ relevant autonomous learning elements in Multimediateaching context and how to make good use of the advantages of Multimedia teaching so as to motivate favorable learning dements and enhance teaching efficiency.Itconducts a survey of110students from two parallel classes in Medical Imagingdepartment of Shijiazhuang Medical College with Questionnaires for autonomouslearning abilities of College English in Multimedia Computer Assisted InstructionContexts, and analyzes the survey result in the writer’s college.This research consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an overview, In thischapter, the writer mainly gives the introduction to the whole thesis, which consists offour sections: background of the research study, the traditional English teaching andlearning status quo analysis, including teaching methods, students’ level, computerlevel of teachers, and school facilities, significance of the research and statement ofthe research.The second chapter is literature review, in the part of literature review, the writermainly gives the brief introductions of the theoretical basis and definitions of keyterms such as, CAI, Autonomous Learning, etc. And the function of CAI the role ofteachers in CAI and the relationship between the functions of Multimedia andAutonomous Learning as well as the relationship between teacher’s function and CAI.And the related research on the topic in China and abroad. And the advantages anddisadvantages of CAI: the teacher should combine with traditional teaching method.Factors that affect college students’ English autonomous learning.The third chapter is research design, the writer chose two parallel classes by theirfinal exam results in the first term of2012-2013, through the questionnaire survey tofind out students’ autonomous learning abilities and students’ attitudes to the presentteaching method and multimedia teaching method. In this chapter, there are somequestionnaires which aim to find the problems of students in English learning and theEnglish class which is liked by them. Also finding out whether CAI improvesstudents’ autonomous learning ability and results by the tests. In the part of teachingprocess, the writer elaborates that how to improve vocational college students’ EnglishAutonomous Learning abilities in Multimedia Computer Assisted Instruction Contexts:the writer introduces the implementation of the CAI class from three aspects: beforeclass, in class, after class.The teacher guides the students to make use of the multimedia network.The fourth chapter is data analysis and discussion, The collected Data and theanalysis of questionnaires and tests are comparatively analyzed by SPSS16.0. As thefinal statistics indicate, the students have had the consciousness of being autonomousin study, but the ability of autonomous learning is universally weak. Meanwhile, inthe learning process, the multimedia and network as emerging auxiliary tools forstudy help to promote the students’ learner autonomy. Moreover, in order to cater forthe trend that the traditional classroom is changing into the computer-assisted one, theteacher role should be switched to help the students learn independently better.The fifth chapter is conclusion and recommendation: from the conclusions ofchapter four, we can find that most of the students find CAI is effective for them toimprove their autonomous learning abilities, and their English proficiency has beenimproved. Therefore, developing higher vocational college English autonomouslearning ability in multimedia teaching context has its theoretical basis, and fits therequirements of the higher vocational English teaching mode reform.
