The auto-antonymy phenomenon is a special lexical phenomenon that exists in many languages. It refers to words contain two opposite glossemes. This phenomenon exists not only in ancient Chinese, but also in modern Chinese. Previous studies have analyzed the cause and quality of the phenomenon from different angles, and contributed a lot in clarifying the nature of the phenomenon. However, there are still many problems in the unity of define standards, the integrity of the argument, as well as the rationality of the reasons explained.Based on this, the thesis firstly proposes the standards of the auto-antonymy words, then collect these words from the6th edition of "Contemporary Chinese Dictionary"and make a statistical analysis of these words. We combine static description, dynamic analysis method and "Qualitative—quantitative---qlitative" method together in this research.This thesis contains six chapters:Chapter one introduces the topic of this thesis, the research background, the research ideas and methods of the thesis.Chapter two defines the standards of the auto-antonymy words, and then count up the words in the6th edition of "Contemporary Chinese Dictionary ", so as to form an initial understanding of the phenomenon.Chapter three analyzes the meaning features of these words.It mainly analyzes features of three espects, fundamental meaning,field of meaning and connotation.Chapter four analyzes the external form features of these words. The external form is divided into two parts, the pronunciation features and the grammatical form features. This chapter analyzes the two parts separately.Chapter five analyzes the causes of these words. This chapter proposes the function of pragmatics and pragmatic strengthening process in the formation of these words, based on the previous studies. Chapter six analyzes the quasi-auto-antonymy words in the6th edition of "Contemporary Chinese Dictionary". Although they don’t possess two opposite meanings in the dictionary now, they have the possibility in the future.Chapter seven is conclusion. It summarizes the contents of this thesis and points out the inadequacies of it.
