For a long time people have been regarding the rural civilization and modern civilization as a mutually exclusive binary oppositions. In this mode of thinking, Lu Yao, whose works show strong preference to rural values, has been classified as one of the conservative writers rejecting modernity. The modern society only interprets the works of Lu Yao as a demonstration of anxiety at the modern world and an appeal to returning to the countryside. This article re-examine Lu Yao from his local navel writing position (why to write), the spirit of the connotation (what to write) and artistic techniques (how to write). Aware of the differences between the two works of Life and The Ordinary World, this paper concentrates on the aesthetic modernity in Lu Yao’s works, through the research and study of his confusion, thinking and ultimate judgment on the gradual transformation of rural areas in the modern world. From Life in which there is a violent conflict between rural and urban areas, to The Ordinary World where the conflict between cities and countryside is alleviated, Lu Yao breaks the mode of dualistic oppositions between the two areas and tries to seek reconciliation. He attempts to explore the existence of a free and kind life by seeking the reconciliation between the rural and urban areas. On this basis, Lu Yao calls for readers to respect, understand, and care for others, as well as guard the goodness and beauty of human nature at their best efforts.
