Traditional designs are auspicious pictures specific to China, which had taken their shapes through continuous accumulation, extension as well as derivation made by our ancestors. As a special kind of visual language symbol, their visual characteristics are represented in various forms. Cognitive paradigms of pictorial symbol, visual language structures and pragmatic features of pictures are the most typical ones among all these characteristics. It is of great significance for us to interpret the meaning of traditional pictures from the perspective of visual language and even to better able to grasp the essence of Chinese traditional culture through a thorough research on diverse representation forms of different characteristics.With a stress on visual language of traditional pictures, this thesis made an exploration on bases and laws of the development of research on visual language of traditional pictures made by the modern art design circles. Besides, this thesis probed into the trend of the research to widen its coverage to the pragmatic regard. The aim of this thesis is to build a clear mode of the application and development of traditional pictures, and to make a rudimental theoretical exploration on future developments of visual communication design.This thesis is divided into five chapters and conducted its research according to a logical order from the abstract to the concrete. First, based on a literature review on researches on traditional pictures, an analysis about the development course of visual language of traditional pictures is made in a bid to explore the relation between visual communication design and the traditional pictures. Meanwhile, this thesis shed light on the philosophical ideas and aesthetic principles implied in traditional pictures through a depiction on their auspicious as well as symbolic features.Second, several laws and features are generalized that are able to represent the language cognitive paradigm of traditional pictures within philosophical and aesthetic regards. The forth chapter analyzed the visual language structure of traditional pictures from the visual theoretical angle. It made a systematic exploration on glossary means, structure utilization and meaning expression of traditional pictures; moreover, it conducted a comprehensive study on visual language characters of traditional pictures.The final chapter is an outlook on pragmatics in the area of traditional picture symbols. It made a research on feasible application of traditional pictures visual meaning in the modern area of visual design. In addition, it probed into the future development of visual design.
