Much attention has been paid to teachers’ professional development since it isthe primary power of the education reform and development and the key to improvethe quality of education. And it has become particularly urgent to do research onnon-governmental college English teachers’ professional development due to theparticularities of identity of these college English teachers and their workingenvironment associated with their short history of running. Therefore, in order topromote non-governmental college English teachers’ professional development, thisstudy, by means of surveying the present situation of non-governmental collegeEnglish teachers’ professional development in the economic booming area andanalyzing its deficiencies, attempts to explore and put forward some correspondingstrategies and suggestions for directing the way of non-government college Englishteachers’ professional development.Working for a non-governmental college English education, the author of thisthesis understands and pays special attention to the education and development ofteachers of English there. Hence this study chose Quangzhou non-governmentalcollege teachers of English as the objects of research on professional development.Based on the relevant research literature at home and abroad for reference, this studytook forty-one teachers of English from three different non-governmental colleges inthe area as investigation object, and through the questionnaire survey and theinterview of four teachers of English chosen from these colleges, explored thesolutions to the problems in non-governmental colleges English teachers’ professionaldevelopment. This study, through investigation, analysis and discussion, finds out thefollowing problems to be solved as follows:(1) The majority of the region’s non-governmental college teachers of English areyoung people, which brings about a prominent problem for English education in thesecolleges.(2) The professional development concept is fuzzy among these non-governmentalcollege teachers of English, and their understanding of their own professionaldevelopment is still at superficial level; (3) The professional identity and self development dynamics of non-governmentalcollege teachers of English are insufficient;(4)The professional knowledge foundation of non-governmental college teachers ofEnglish is not solid enough.
