| This thesis attempts to analyze Hotel du Lac from the perspective of theinitiation theories by studying the novel on the aspects of its characters and structures.The features of an initiation story are revealed, and the courageous and persistentpursuit of the female intellectuals with Edith Hope being the representative to get herlove, marriage, and dignity is found and explored. In addition, by giving deepthoughts on the uniqueness of Hotel du Lac compared with the traditional initiationstories and the traditional female initiation stories, this thesis further exploresBrookner’s concern of the middle-aged female intellectuals’ spiritual initiation. Thisthesis aims to deepen the understanding of Edith Hope’s spiritual initiation, tomotivate the reflection on the root causes of her spiritual initiation at her middle agesby the genre analysis. Moreover, it adds a new perspective to the research of thisnovel and its author. |
