This is a practice report based on the guide interpreting task conducted by theauthor in the Puppet Manchurian Palace and the History of Japanese Occupation ofNortheast China Museum. In the task, the author interpreted on-the-spot presentationsof two different docents to an American guest, and returned the guest’s remarks. Thisreport takes the task as its central study object, describes the task process, categorizestask difficulties, elaborates on their respective coping strategies and explores ways ofimproving grammatical accuracy in C-E interpretations. Through an all-dimensionalexamination of an individual case, the report is expected to identify commonunderlying principles instrumental to other participants in this profession.The report covers five chapters. Chapter1Task Description introduces the basicinformation and defining features of the task; summarizes the report’s theme, researchpurpose and method.Chapter2,3and4constitute the keystone of the report. Chapter2ProcessDescription describes the entire task process in a chronological order, from whichreaders can get a panoramic view of the task. Chapter3Case Study generalizes andcategorizes types of task difficulties and explores their respective coping strategies.Chapter4Grammatical Error Analysis approaches the report’s theme from agrammatical view, in which it calculates the interpreter’s grammatical errors in C-Einterpretations and then probes into their causes and improving measures.Chapter5Conclusion sums up the task with a fivefold conclusion, whichincludes: the role of classroom drill in developing interpreting competence;cross-cultural communication versus interpreting; tactics for pre-stage preparation;benefit of real practice in exposing interpreter’s weaknesses; the interpreter’sdeepened understanding of interpreting theories.
