A Study Of Humor Translation In The Big Bang Theory Under Gestalt Theory

Humor is a type of aesthetics which needs to be felt from the deep of the heart. When translating sitcom’s subtitle, translator needs to convey the spirit of humor but not only the meaning of language and must pay attention to the integral reproduction of the images and artistic conception of the sourcing text. Gestalt theory emphasize on integrity which mirrors the integral reproduction of sitcom subtitle translation, therefore, the writer’s suggestion is to bring Gestalt theory into the translation of sitcom’s subtitle. The successful application of Gestalt theory in poetry translation sets a good example that it is probable to introduce Gestalt theory into the translation of sitcom subtitle. The application of Gestalt theory in graphic design also gives me inspiration. Based on Gestalt theory and analytical methods such as literature review, text analysis, comparison approach and comprehensive analysis, the writer tries to put forward the translation strategies such as global approach, transfer approach, elimination approach, closure approach in the translation of sitcom’s subtitle. By doing this, the positive application of these strategies in translating the Big Bang Theory is tested and the feasibility of introducing Gestalt theory in guiding sitcom’s subtitle translation is also proved.
