Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn is “the classical musician of Vienna," anoutstanding representative of18th century Europe’s most famous musicians. His Horn Concertosin D Major, as the first French horn concertos ever composed, played an important role in thehistory of classical music and the French horn as a musical instrument.By the middle of18th century, the complete status of the Concerto as a musical genre hadbeen reached. The use of a solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra gradually replaced theConcerto grosso and became the dominant form of the genre. The Concerto solo instrument ofchoice was usually the piano, stringed instruments, woodwinds and occasionally brass instruments.Haydn’s two Horn Concertos in D Major were first created in1762and1764respectively,demonstrating for the first time the horn as a solo instrument. These two concertos were fairlypioneering from the view of the performance of a solo instrument using full musical scale within aSymphony. This seems to be the pinnacle of this genre in the time. This paper will analyze theworks’ genre features, music structure and playing style with my own practices and experiences.
