| Extra-linguistic knowledge includes common knowledge of a given field, in-depthstudy of a particular topic and grasping of information on site. If the content of aspeech is familiar to the interpreter, she will be more confident, and the delivery willmore likely be accurate and fluent. On the contrary, if the interpreter fails tocomprehend the less familiar content to her, the completeness, accuracy and fluencyof delivery would be undermined due to hesitation or even distortion.The author explains the importance of extra-linguistic knowledge and analyzes a casestudy based on the consecutive interpretation of Biden’s speech at the University ofPennsylvania.
