Interpretation is an extremely complex communicative activity with meaning delivery during the whole process. However, meaning loss is unavoidable in interpreting due to various factors, such as the interpreter’s capability, language differences and cultural diversity. With the study focused on Chinese-English interpretation from the perspective of Skopos Theory, this paper makes an analysis on the phenomenon of meaning loss in Chinese-English interpretation and adopts study measures like literature referencing and comparison analyzing so as to illustrate specific compensation measures for interpreters. A perspective of Skopos Theory not only helps interpreters better understand the phenomenon of meaning loss in Chinese-English interpretation and improve the interpretation quality, but also expands the scope of application of Skopos Theory and provides an example to apply Skopos Theory in interpreting studies.The introduction part of this paper shows the situation of interpreting studies at home and abroad, especially the current studies of meaning loss in interpretation in China. After that this paper makes a brief illustration of Skopos Theory by presenting its three principles. Then it comes to the definition of meaning and three factors contributing to meaning loss, namely, effort factor, language factor and cultural factor. It also comes up with acceptable meaning loss and unacceptable meaning loss from the perspective of Skopos Theory. In the last part of this paper, three compensation measures are put forward to deal with the unacceptable meaning loss, which is illustrated by citing examples.All in all, this paper analyzes the three factors of meaning loss and elaborating the specific compensation measures from the perspective of Skopos Theory, aiming to help interpreters enhance their understanding of meaning loss, reduce meaning loss in Chinese-English interpretation, and improve the quality of interpretation.
