| Together with the cultural turn in translation studies, Manipulation School came into being in the1980s. Its founder Andre Lefevere regards translation as rewriting. The choices of original works to be translated and translation methods is subjected to and manipulated by an array of factors, to name but a few ideology, poetics, institution, patronage, financial strength. Manipulation Theory gives the translation study a brand new perspective, turning the focus from inner factors of the text to the outer cultural factors, which broadens the field of study.Nineteen Eighty-four written by English writer George Orwell, is a famed the Dystopias literature classic. It has been translated into more than65language including Chinese. The deep analysis towards its translation not only helps the understanding of readers but also serves as a chance to learn about western politics, culture and history. Grounded with Manipulation Theory as the theoretical basis, mainly focusing the ideological constraints, the thesis chooses two Chinese versions, representing the Mainland of China and Taiwan to do a case study, in order to testify or falsify the feasibility of Manipulation Theory in translation study with the help of quantity analysis, the thesis aims to testify that ideology can effect translation strategy, choice of translating works and its publication and circulation; however, ideological constraints on translation have a process of change diachronically and synchronically. |
