Styles of translation are various, among which popular science English plays animportant role in disseminating science and increasing the science cognition of the public. However, the domestic and foreign studies on the theory are not complete; and the qualities ofthe translations work needs to be improved. Under this circumstance, this report analyses anddiscusses the Chinese translation project of The New Dachshund in view of Germanyfunctionalist Skopos theory regarding the purpose to generalize certain translation methods. The report discusses the background of this project and the previous translation theories, depicts the three rules in the Skopos theory that are to strictly obey, which are the purpose rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. First of all, the primary rule of the purpose principle in thetranslation is that the goal and the strategies are determined by the particular purpose. Theauthor’s aim in this practice is to accurately, commonly and easily introduce the knowledge ofthe science articles to Chinese readers. Hereby the author implements the strategies includingthe combination of literal translation and paraphrasing, along with the divisions of longattributes into short ones. Secondly, the principle of integrity allows the freedom inparaphrasing and rewriting to a certain extent. Translators should consider adding peculiarphrases or words from the culture of the target language into the sentences, which makes themmore understandable, so the readers are able to resonate with the article. At last, the principleof fidelity asks the translators not to give up the original text, which means they should beresponsible for both the original author and the readers. By practicing, it is advised that thecompletely free and excessive translation should be avoided. The introduction of outstanding science books and high quality of translation work willpromote the development of public science cognitions in our country. On the prospective ofGermany functionalism theory, this study aims to contribute to the perfection of the scientificEnglish translation and practice.
