Chinese Buddhist sculpture is an integral part of Chinese sculpture art. Thispaper takes the grotto statuary from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to TangDynasty as study objects, by looking up to a variety of historical documents,photographs and details on the sculptures to make comparisons and systemize thedevelopmental features of the grotto statuary from the perspective of linearity art,trying to find out its development track and to understand and appreciate the art ofBuddhist sculpture better, which may help us make a better use of these elements intoday’s creation. This thesis is divided into four chapters, and the main contentsinclude the following aspects:The first chapter is an overview of lines. This chapter begins with an overview ofthe position of line in the history of art development. Then it presents an overview ofthe pattern of manifestation of lines in calligraphy, Chinese painting and sculpture.Finally, it discusses the aesthetic appreciation of lines. We can get a betterunderstanding of its features, and the art of calligraphy, Chinese painting andsculpture by analyzing emotional expression of lines.The second and the third chapter respectively discusses the artistic expression oflines on the grotto statuary of the Southern and Northern Dynasties and of Sui-Tangperiod. The two chapters summarized the elements in the artistic expression of lines,and systemized the characteristics of the grotto statuary of different periods to get aclear image of the representing forms of lines.The fourth chapter draws a conclusion of this thesis. This chapter provides theanswer to the question in the very beginning of this paper, and summarizes the patternof manifestation of lines in Chinese Buddhist sculptures. It analyzes the forms ofartistic presentation of lines in Chinese calligraphy and painting in combination withlines in the grotto statuary. Then it systemized the development of the manifestationof line in Buddhist grotto statuary with analysis of its features.
