| Literature translation, that is using another language to convey the artistic conception of the original works and helping readers achieve the same enlightenment, and feeling of aesthetics as in reading the translation. As an important part of literature translation, prose translation draws many translators’ attention both in ancient and modern days at home and abroad. Synaesthesia plays an important part in portraying the image and expression of feelings. A successful prose translation depends on the transference of thought, feeling and artistic conception, which is an artistic expression form of prose; the thought is the soul of the prose; feeling is an artistic field in which the reader are led to an imaginary space through vivid description as well as the fusion of feelings and scene. Prose known as "being unconfined in form but closely-knit by sprit", and it constructs and expresses its thought and feeling through the combination of formal elements and non-formal elements, including the use of the synaesthesia. Moonlight over the Lotus Pond and Rush are rich in applications of synaesthesia and they have rich meaning of aesthetic expression. Therefore, it is worthwhile for us to do great efforts on the aesthetic value in translation of synaesthesia of the two famous works.According to the Aesthetic of Reception, readers occupy the dominant position in the appreciation of the artistic conception. Two important concepts in this theory are "Horizon of Expectations" and "Uncertainty", which correspond with the real and virtual scene in prose. Therefore, the adoption of the theory into the comparative study of synaesthesia in translations of prose has its theoretical and practical basis and is quite feasible. And at the same time the author hopes to employ a new and different aspect to explore the synaesthesia to make some possible contributions to prose translation, and spread Chinese culture to all over the word widely. On the basis of the Aesthetics of Reception Theory, this thesis explores the aesthetics values of synaesthesia selected from the parts of two essays, which applied the synaesthesia by Zhu Ziqing-Moonlight over the Lotus Pond and Rush. It makes a detailed analysis of two English versions from the following two aspects:"Horizon of Expectations" and "Uncertainty" of the Aesthetics of Reception, and aims to find out if the English translations better convey the original author’s aim at depicting the thoughts and feelings or achieve the purpose of the beauty and vividness of the scenery as well as the reflection of the aesthetics values in the translation. |
