| Autonomous learning plays an essential role in the process of language learning. Issued by the department of tertiary education in the Ministry of Education,"The Basic Requirements for the Teaching of English as a course in Vocational colleges"(Trial) has definitely pointed out that vocational college students’autonomous learning ability in English should be cultivated in order to lay a firm foundation for their lifelong learning. Based on the contemporary education psychology especially the three theories, namely cognitive psychology, constructive psychology and humanistic psychology, the author conducted a survey and a detailed analysis through the questionnaire and interviews. The results show that non-English majors’autonomous learning ability in higher vocational college is unsatisfactory. There are many factors that account for this problem. The main factors affecting the college students’autonomous language learning are the students’ learning motivation, self-efficacy, attribution, learning strategies and self-assessment etc. Through the statistics and analysis of the data collected, the author draws the following conclusions:Firstly, the teachers need enhance their awareness of autonomy and change the teaching mode in class. Secondly, it is imperative for the students to accept some special training of English autonomous learning and master the related learning strategies. Thirdly, students need start with themselves and further strengthen the consciousness of autonomous learning. |
