Macrocyclic compounds are important part of supramolecular chemistry, which have unique spatial configuration. Their applications in catalysis, biomimicry, medicine, molecular recognition and other aspects have attracted increasing attention. The design and synthesis of novel macrocyclic compounds have been the hot issues of organic chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. As an important kind of host-guest compounds, macrocyclic compounds play an important role in the field of molecular recognition. In this paper, we designed and synthesized two kinds of Schiff base macrocycles: triazine-containing Schiff base macrocycles and thiosemicarbazide-containing Schiff base macrocycles. Their structures were characterized by IR,1H NMR,13C NMR and ESI/MS techniques, and their applications in ion recognition were studied on UV-Vis absorption spectrum. This paper were divided into three parts:in the first part, we give a brief introduction of the development about supramolecular chemistry, macrocyclic compounds and molecular recognition. In the second part, we synthesized a kind of Schiff base macrocycles which containing triazine. The studies on their UV-Vis absorption spectrum show that this kind of compounds do not recognize the anions which we measured, but Schiff base macrocycles9,13,15have selective recognition for Fe3+. In the third part, we synthesized a kind of Schiff base macrocycles which containing thiosemicarbazide. The studies on their UV-Vis absorption spectrum show that this kind of compounds have recognition for anions and poor recognition for metal ions.Compared with the ion recognition effect of all compounds we find that the recognition effect of Schiff base macrocycles is closely related with their own spatial configuration and coordination capabilities. Only when their spatial configuration and coordination capabilities are matched to the ion, can they recognize the ion.
