After The Ming dynasty of Longqing and Wanli until The middle of Qing dynasty,out of Wu school, Songjiang school and Wangshimin, Wangjian, Wanghui,Wangyuanqi, Wuli,Yunshouping who take justice and peace for beauty, Xuwei initiatsa new painting custom that is excellent and strange and publicitypersonality.Although this artistic pursuit before Ming dynasty has sporadicappearanced, for instant Shike of the Five Dynasties (907-960), Sudongpo of Songdynasty, Gongkai of Yuan dynasty and so on, until The Ming and Qing dynasties, theart interest which pursuits ugly and stranger has been a strong trend, and there aremany artist, as if Xuwei, Chenhongshou, Gaoqipei, Zhuda. Their creative work makethat traditional chinese painting not only are full of ordinary artistic figures forexample the ladies at court and palace, the airy pavilions and pagodas, the greenyhills and waters, but also full of stranger art figures as if Zhongkui who catch ghost,cold forest and ugly stone, dead wood and stranger tree.These art figures can besummarised as ugly, so I deem that the research of Ming and Qing dynasty paintingwould be propitious to comprehend the complex relationships of ugliness and art.From this aspect, the paper discuss on the definition of the ugly, summarize tworelationships between the ugly and art that are turning ugliness into beauty andregarding ugliness as beauty. The former is pathway from ugliness to art, the latter ispathway from art to ugliness. In addition, I give closer analysis the specific categoriesin the two great relationships. In the turning ugliness into beauty, I inquiry to thepresentation in art of ugliness by Zhongkui, ugly stone, dead wood and stranger tree.In the taking ugliness for beauty, I inquiry to the presentation in art of ugliness by thegreat splash-ink form and the primitive and crude form.
