The openwork carving is a sculpture that lies in between of a round and a relief sculpture. There are different types of openwork carving including stone carving, wood carving, metal carving, jade carving and bone carving, etc. The openwork carving has a lot ofadvantages, for example, space adaptation ability, strong artistic expression, light weight, good ventilation performance, excellent light transmission, reduced material cost, and a wide range of applications. The history and application of openwork carving have a close relationship with the development of traditional Chinese text, decorative accessories, architecture and landscapes. The development history of openwork carving suggests its strong vitality, and even now, modern sculptors and designers can still obtain their inspiration from the openwork carving. Thus, in order to carry forward the openwork carving, it is important that we must pay attention to the unique art. Thus, the purpose of this paper is through the study of openwork carving art, folk art in the possibility of exploring engraved the continue development.Methods in this paper are beginning at the historical research and learning of the openwork carving. Not only in the material, the content, the use of analysis, but also the formation and development of the Chinese meaning.The openwork carving has different techniques and the processes are not the same, in this article, a detailed explanation of wood openwork carving technique will be given.And the two openwork carvings that I made “lotus” and “A day of my father” use completely different techniques what can analyse the untilize of opening carving’s craftsThere is a saying in the field of art called “what’s unique for a nation is also precious for the world.” As a result, we must always question ourselves that how we can find the way to maintain our own culture in an environment with culture diversity. In the meantime, how openwork carving as part of sculpture, can highlight its irreplaceable position as well as part of the traditional technology, is another question we need to solve?...
