With the increasing number of foreigners who are learning Mandarin, people pay more attention to the efficiency of Mandarin teaching. The New HSK, as the assessment approach, has significance of guiding both teachers and students. There are a huge number of multiple meaning nouns, which are difficult for international students to remember and often misused.This paper aims to study multiple meaning words in the New HSK, under the guidance of cognitive linguistics theories and based on the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary. The author tries to provide a new approach to the study of multiple meaning nouns, to seek the cognitive basis of the generation of multiple meaning nouns’senses and to discuss the deriving mechanism among the senses of multiple meaning nouns; to analyze the deriving situation of multiple meaning words in different categories, to seek regularity through categorizing multiple meaning words in the New HSK; to improve Mandarin teaching in multiple meaning nouns and assist international students with their studies in this area.This paper consists of seven chapters. Chapter One will introduce the background of this paper, cognitive linguistics, the situation of multiple meaning word research and the definition of the research scope; Chapter Two is to discuss cognitive approaches to multiple meaning word based on cognitive linguistics theories and will analyze the theoretical basis of deriving senses, to provide theoretical support to the following study; Chapter Three to Chapter Five will categorize the multiple meaning words in the New HSK, and analyze the relationship between each sense, to find the deriving mechanism behind them; Chapter Six will discuss possible improvements to Mandarin teaching based on the research and explore varias methods in teaching and learning multiple meaning word; Chapter Seven is the conclusion. It will discuss the outcomes of the study. The main body of this paper is from Chapter Two to Chapter Six.
