The monotones of black, white and gray are the valuable treasure of Chinese contemporary art. It emerged in the period of "85New Wave Movement". It has spanned nearly30years, during which it still maintains its artistic independence and a natural distance from social reality, and tension within social reality. It is always an initiative and important choice for artistic practice of a considerable number of artists of criticality and pioneering spirit. This suggests that black, white and gray is mass-based and complies with the needs of aesthetic culture and realistic creation of Chinese people. Oriented by the formation and the development process of black, white and gray in contemporary Chinese oil paintings, this paper puts emphasis on the painters’ evolution of artistic ideology and the characteristics of the evolution of their painting styles, who use black, white and gray to create representative works, in order to reveal the truth that black, white and gray in contemporary Chinese oil paintings emerges in its interactions with the times. This paper aims at encouraging young art workers not to be fettered by old conventions, but to make own innovations, break through all kinds of traditional rules, and interact with the times in order to make artistic innovations.
