Thomas Hardy is one of the western writers whom Hsu Chih-mo respects and admiresmost. Hsu Chih-mo, as the first person introducing Hardy to Chinese readers, translatesHardy’s poems into Chinese, translates “Hardy” into the modern Chinese name "哈代"which is most accepted and used till now. What’s more, he is the first and the only Chinesewho has met and talked with Hardy. Hsu Chih-mo, for the first time, led a trend of “Hardyresearch”in the20’s and30’s of last century, and laid a solid foundation for later study on"Hardy in China". At the same time, his literary marriage with Hardy also constitutes theresearch object for the later scholars to investigate.In the process of translating and introducing Hardy to Chinese readers, Hsu Chih-mohimself is influnced by Hardy in some of his poetics thoughts and poetry writing skillsconsciously or unconsciously. This paper tries to systematically examine, comb, andanalyze all the factors concerning Hsu Chih-mo’s translation and acceptation of Hardy. Thefull content is divided into four chapters. The first chapter mainly summarizes HsuChih-mo’s introduction of Hardy the man and the translation of Hardy’s poetry. At thesame time, the author analyzes the reasons of Hsu Chih-mo’s selecting of Hardy and hispoems. The second chapter deals with the context in which Hsu Chih-mo absorbs thenutrition from Hardy’s philosophical thoughts and poems, discussing respectively aboutHsu Chih-mo’s personal literary aesthetic accomplishment, social as well as culturalcontext of those days and so on. The third chapter mainly discusses Hsu Chih-mo’sabsorption and transcendence of Hardy’s deep “pessimistic thoughts”. Hsu Chih-mo feelsHardy’s pity and grief, sullen and angry, serious and earnest, grasps Hardy’s profound loveand courage behind his pessimism. And more importantly, Hardy’s influnce is one of thekey elements that push Hsu Chih-mo towards modernism writing. The fourth chapter ofthis paper is, through specific case analysis, about Hardy’s influence on Hsu Chih-mo inpoems-writing skills.
