This paper aims to investigate the similarities and differences of mental representation on drawing "family" and the subjects are junior middle school students from single-parent and biparental family in Beijing. At the same time, the author compares and analyzes the relationship between drawing and students’ mental images through combining the results of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and Family Environment Scale-Chinese Version (FES-CV), to explore the feasibility and meaning of carrying out the activity on therapeutic art education in middle school.Considering the applicability, exploration and descriptiveness of this study, the author uses case study method, interview and observation as research methods. A total of211junior school students were selected from6classes of4school and23of them are from single parent family. The innovation of this paper lies in the combination of qualitative data——"students’ drawing on ’family’, their feeling on the drawing and the author’s observation" and quantitative data——"EPQ and FES-CV", avoiding previous studies’ problems which emphasize too much on researchers’subjectivities towards the drawings. At the same time, students’ verbal explications remedy the monotonousness of quantitative data.According to the findings of the research, drawings ofjunior middle school students from single-parent and biparental family have similarities and differences in layout, motion and symbol etc. Drawing can channel students’ emotion and cultivate the ability of self-recognition. This research provides possibility for the author to cooperate with the head teachers, art teachers and mental counselors to carry out follow-up studies on therapeutic art education.
