The end of the19th century witnessed the Western Christian culturegradually introduced in two directions to the frontier minority areas ofSouthwest China from southeast Asia and mainland China, causing greatinfluence. Distributed in such borders areas as Lincang and Simao, the peopleof Wa, Lahu and Hani received in the early years of the nineteenth centuryChristianity via Christian Baptist church. Through nearly a century ofdevelopment, Christian thought has been deeply rooted in the nationalconsciousness. This study involves two such Christian villages, whosereligious ceremonies are deeply established in their national collectivism. Thisthesis starts with the Christian ceremonial music of the villages, and makesuse of comparison of their music styles under the influence of Christianity, toexplore the different influences of Christianity upon them, to explore, throughthe comparison of two kinds of music culture, the similarity and regularity oftheir occurrence and development, and, finally, to account for, through amusic-anthropological interpretation of these phenomena, what music culturephenomena we see today.The thesis consists of an introduction, four chapters and an epilogue. Theintroduction lays emphasis on the source of my choice, the purpose of thestudy, and the theoretical significance, research value, the current status andresearch methods of the research. The first chapter is about the basic situationof Wa and Lahu and the spread of Christianity in the areas. The secondchapter is a music ethnographical description of Christian ceremony music ofthe two villages. In the third chapter, the first and second quarter deal with themusic field, hymns and ritual sounds of the two villages respectively, while thethird section compares the above content, focusing on the similarities anddifferences between the two regions. The fourth chapter uses the model of aspecific music anthropologist to explain the Christian music culture of thevillages, at the three levels of historical constitution, social maintenance andpersonal creation, and finally to reveal the cause of the similarities anddifferences the Christian music culture between different nationalities under the influence of the same faith.
