The existing of Malaysian Chinese secondary school s art education in early20th centurywas parallel with the foundation of overseas Chinese schools since hundred years ago. Startingas crafting classes and drawing lessons in the early days, art was gradually became acompulsory subject in the secondary schools after the changing of time and the influential ofthe five ways of life: moral, intellectual, physical, collective, and aesthetics. However theJapanese Occupation had brought to a standstill in art education. After the World War II, the artcurriculum was restored to its pre-war level until1989when the integrated curriculum wasimplemented. This thesis tries to study the development of the art curriculum for IndependentChinese secondary schools and National Type secondary schools, from which to explore thevalue of art education, to re-examine the difficulties faced and the limitations of the artteaching. |
