Xia Mianzun was a famous writer, translator and publisher in China’s modern history.Moreover, he was a deserved Chinese educator. Engaged in the research of Chinese educationfor more than40years, he gradually understood the essence of Chinese education with long-term practice and built a unique Chinese education thought system. Based on the inheritanceof traditional theory and reference of foreign theory, Xia Mianzun’s Chinese educationthought was formed by combining with the reality of Chinese education in China whichshines with the glory of times and presents rich personal feature. This paper willsystematically expound the unique thought of Xia Mianzun in the field of reading education.The paper can be divided into three parts. The first part mainly generalizes XiaMianzun’s Chinese education practice. The second part will emphasize the discussion on XiaMianzun’s reading teaching thought from two aspects of what to read and how to read; andprobe into his treatment on the writings in classical Chinese as well as his teaching methodsof starting from the form and appreciating in a deep level. The final part makes an analysis onthe enlightenment of Xia Mianzun on the current Chinese reading teaching in our country andthe method for the reference in the current reading teaching.Xia Mianzun’s Chinese teaching thought is unique because it was formed in the transientperiod from traditional Chinese education to modern Chinese education; of which the readingteaching thought embodies the nature of Chinese and absorbs the essence of traditionalreading teaching in our country, this makes a great reference significance for the currentreading teaching in our country and effectively improves the students’ Chinese reading ability.
