With the reform of t economic structure and marketization, the role of market forces ineconomic development has become prominently bigger. Marketization effects the genderwage gap and gender discrimination in China. Scholars have had different ideas whether themarketization deepen the gender discrimination or not. A key reason is having neglected therole of occupation. While the existing research results show that occupational segregationagainst female influences the gender wage gap. In order to making up the limitation, weassume the difference between the state-owned sector and the private sector represents thedifference between a low marketization degree and a high marketization degree and researchthe influence of occupational segregation in the state-owned sector and in the private sector.,which is useful to understand the relationship between the marketization and genderdiscrimination.Based on data set from China Health and Nutrition Survey (2009), this researchcalculates the difference of occupational distribution between male and female in thestate-owned sector and in the private sector., and use employing Appleton (1999) wagedecomposition method to break down their average hourly wage differential into four sections:intra-occupational unequal pay portion, occupational distribution portion, explained portion,unexplained portion. The results show that there exit gender wage gap and occupationalsegregation in both the state-owned sector and the private sector, and the degree of genderwage gap and occupational segregation in the private sector is higher than in the state-ownedsector.。It’s also shown in this research that occupational segregation has little influence ongender wage gap and it is conducive to close the gender wage gap. Female are not prohibitedfrom certain occupation due to discrimination.Occupational segregation has a bigger impactin the state-owned sector than in the private sector. Intra-occupational unequal pay portion ismain source of gender wage gap. Intra-occupational unequal pay portion in private sector isalmost due to the unexplained portion, while in the state-owned sector just68.52%due to theunexplained portion.
