The emergence of Chinese journalism education was deeply connected with the development of Chinese news career and the influence of western journalism education. At the same time, the journalism education workers of the Republic of China who searched for the value of journalism education also played a role of "catalyst" directly. Early in the time of the Republic of China, there were many malpractices in journalism in China. The news industry was in urgent need of news professionals of high attainment. Under the phenomenon of such contradiction, a group of people with strong social sense of responsibility advocated opening journalism education, so as to promote the development of journalism and the progress of society. Under their unremitting efforts, the journalism seminar in Beijing university was founded in1918. Its establishment announced that Chinese journalism education had been originated. Since then, a large number of journalism schools were created, such as St John’s college of journalism, Yanjing university’s journalism college, Fudan university’s school of journalism. The educational purpose of all these colleges was to cultivate news professionals to serve the society. To achieve this goal, journalism education workers of the Republic of China established a set of skills, knowledge, moral education content. They not only emphasised on professional skills training, but also payed attention to students’general knowledge to cultivate news generalists. Besides, news professionalism and moral education had also been equally payed attention to. In the respect of teaching method, they encouraged students to practice and emphasized the combination of theory and practice. And some journalism colleges set up their own newspaper, news agency or press hall for students to internship. In order to improve journalism education, they respectively put forward combining the practical and theoretical, collaborating academia and industry and localization of journalism education as methods. During this period, intellectuals proposed to popularize the journalism education to improve the people’s ability of cognition and understanding of media, which, to some extent, can be regarded as the germ of media literacy education.Affected by historical circumstances, the journalism education thoughts of the Republic of China always reflected the strong sense of social responsibility. From the factors such as the aim, content or method of education, professional journalism education thoughts also initially formed in this period. At the same time, while transplanting, imitating and criticizing western journalism education thoughts, the thoughts in the Republic of China appeared some certain characteristics of "cultural adaptation". In general, journalism education thoughts of the Republic of China promoted the modernization of Chinese Journalism education and journalism. It not only gave humanistic spirit to Chinese journalism education, but also made people attach importance to the media literacy education. As well, it promoted the professionalization process of Chinese news career. Restricted by the historical conditions, the journalism education thoughts of the Republic of China still had some limitations, which is that what educators described was different from the fact while practicing. In spite of this, the reformation of current journalism education can still receive enlightenment from predecessors’ thoughts, which is strengthening news mental and moral education, emphasizing the combination of theory and practice, improving citizen’s media literacy, cultivating news talents who know many skills while is expert in one type.
