Language teaching material is the important resource in the Chinese language teaching, illustrations is the organic part of teaching material, which plays an important role in students’ understanding of the text, observation, imagination, creativity, and the improvement of aesthetic ability. Therefore, the study of Chinese textbook illustrations meets the need of improving the efficiency of classroom teaching, and the need of developing teaching resources. In order to understand the choreography status quo of illustrations in elementary school language teaching material, this study selected two types of Chinese textbooks:PEP Chinese textbook and Hanlin "National language" textbook for the comparative analysis, and put forward reasonable suggestions on scientization of the elementary school language teaching material.Through the study we found that: first, Hanlin "National language" textbooks’ illustrations have various types of format design, and picture composition is reasonable; while the format design of PEP Chinese textbooks’ illustrations is too single. Second, figures, animals and plants’ image designs of Hanlin "National language" textbooks’ illustrations are lively, expressions are rich and clothing is diversified; PEP Chinese textbooks’ image designs have some naivety, but most of the images are the same, barely change. Third, Hanlin’s illustrations present rich variety of forms of media, colorful and bright; PEP’s media selection is relatively single, color lightness and saturation are relatively low, and the picture aren’t bright enough. Fourth, Hanlin’s illustrations are vivid, fitting closely with the article content, and the key part of text is reflected in the picture; PEP’s illustrations have relatively appropriate depiction of the whole scene in article, but lack of some detailed processing of pictures. Based on these studies, the author suggested: first, the size of design can be expanded appropriately in Chinese textbook. Second, the choreography format of textbook illustrations can be diversified, and should pay attention to the position of graphic design. Third, the choice of media can also be diversified, different picture can be presented with different media, which is beneficial to enrich images and enhance the interest of textbook illustrations. Fourth, we need to pay attention to the printing effect and quality of illustrations. Fifth, illustration design should reflect the content of the same graphic, to maximize the function of the illustrations.
