Xi’an is an important national research, education and industrial base, and it is the most important center city in the Northwest of China. With the implementation of the Western Development Strategy, Xi’an has undergone enormous changes. The rapid development of the city, is bound to stimulate the demand for land resources, which would cause the entire regional land use spatial pattern and structure of the major adjustments and changes. Timely grasp of the dynamics of land-use is very important for the rational utilization of land resource and environmental protection. At the same time, strengthen the quantity and quality of have a great significant for land resources for sustainable economic development.In this paper, Firstly datasets of land use between1984and2010were supervised classification to get the present land-use map by ERADS software. Secondly using the spatial analysis model of ARCGIS9.3to deal with data of land use, such as overlay function.Thirdly analyzed the quantitative change of land use of Xi’an city by mathematical statistics software. At the same time, according to the actual situation of the study area, selected the relevant landscape metrics to quantitative analysis of landscape spatial pattern of land use change of Xi’an. Besides, on the basis of socio-economic data and other information, discussed driven mechanism of land use change in Xi’ an from qualitative and quantitative two aspects. The main results achieved in this article are as follows:(1)From1984to2010year, land use of Xi’an city has a great change nearly30years. There are some different changes between different land use types:the area of farmland continued to decreased and the extent of farmland was large. Construction land exhibited the biggest change amplitude. The percentage of the waters increased to1.52%in2010year.The area of forest and grassland increased in2010year compared with1984year. From the transformation between the various types of land use, farmland, forest and grassland mainly transformed into construction land, waters mainly converted into farmland, construction land mainly converted into waters. From the land use of each county in Xi’an, the rapid development of Chang’an District and Gaoling County makes a significant increase in the area of construction land and farm land generally reduced. (2)The SHDI of land use showed a increased trend. Because of the acceleration of the process of human activities, Xi’an land use has become increasingly diverse and diversity gradually increased. Nearly30years of land use in Xi’an, the conversion mainly between farm land and construction land, and the shape of the landscape also became more regular. From the point of plaque type levels, landscape pattern from farm land, grassland-based, waters, construction of mosaic transformed into various types of plaque farmland, forest, grassland, construction land, waters and other distributed pattern..(3) Analyzed driven mechanism of land use change in Xi’an from qualitative and quantitative two aspects. Discovered that Xi’an driving factors of land use change can be summarized as demographic factors, the level of economic development, agricultural production levels and living standards. Population growth is the most important factor for land use change in Xi’an. In addition, Natural factors and policies guide are factors that caused land use change in Xi’an.
