As a kind of important industrial mechanical equipment, gantry press is widely used in various industry fields like machinery manufacturing, aerospace industry, shipbuilding industry and electrical instrumentation, which is closely related with people’s lives. As the domestic forging companies continue to focus on technology, the technological level of domestic press has been close to international standards, but there still are some gaps in the press appearance design. Most domestic gantry press only have mechanical structure and appearance design requires only mechanical stability and rugged look, resulting in a lack of beauty and human design, which is the core competitiveness. Excellent mechanical products must combine aesthetics, styling and people-oriented, to achieve perfect social and economic benefits. Therefore, it is completely necessary to analysis and study the modeling design and humanized operation of gantry press.Appearance and the ergonomics analysis of gantry press is a comprehensive study based on aesthetics, art design, engineering design, ergonomic interaction and other disciplines. The study of the structural features and layout must be combined with modeling design and engineering design, then turn out the design methods and procedures. Based on this, three-dimensional CAD software are used to establish a digital human model combined with the actual operation experimental statistics of the ergonomic dimensions, vision, movement. And through the operating simulation, operating comfort is improved to solve the problem of ergonomic.The paper first introduces the general situation and development of the press both in our country and abroad, focusing on the source of the subject and research meaning; Then, combined modeling design and engineering design, the modeling features and styling intention of the gantry press is analyzed in theory, the design principles, procedures and the typical requirements, and the factors affect the colors, materials and the topcoat painting is found out; Moreover, ergonomics and cognitive psychology are used to analysis the operation action, a digital virtual human model for ergonomic simulation is created and a user interface improved design is used for a forecasting model experiment; Finally, based on comprehensive study and analysis of the former chapters, a comprehensive design for JM36-250-type gantry press is presented and the design programs passed the final evaluation.In this paper, there are three major innovative points:(1)The paper presents a typical collaborative approach for gantry presses on the cooperation of modeling design and engineering technology convergence. It separately analyzes the materials, processing technology, industrial design and other aspects of the cooperation, and brings the methods of value engineering into the evaluation. The collaborative approaches solve the problem of traditional design, and reduce development costs from the root.(2)The paper creates a digital virtual human model for ergonomic emulation analysis. This ergonomic emulation is based on the actual operation experimental statistics of the human dimensions, vision, movement and operating space, which can be calculated and bring a more realistic optimal operating range and size.(3)The paper establishes a design method for the control panel of the gantry presses based on cognitive psychology, including the operation interface elements, space and layout. With the design principles and procedures, the improved design is created for forecasting model experiment, and the result greatly improves the operational efficiency.
