Researching on high temperature tolerant loss control agents for drilling fluids in deep or untra-deep wells is one of the core contents for drilling fluid additives. The ability of loss control agents directly responses for well stability, formation protection, etc. This paper addresses on the study of high temperature tolerant resin loss control agent for water-based drilling fluids. Drilling fluid chemistry, macromolecule synthesis and characterization are the fundamental theories which are used in this paper. With the laboratory experiments, a novel quaternary polymerization system of loss control agents. Then, lots of lab tests and analysis are done for three different quaternary polymerization loss control agent. Meanwhile, the influence of sulfonation degree and the amount of adsorbed groups to the ability of loss control under different temperature and salinity is especially clarified.Three different quaternary polymerization loss control agents, PF-1(sulfanilic acid, p-methylbenzenesulfonic acid, phenol and formaldehyde), PF-2(sulfanilic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, phenol and formaldehyde), PF-3(p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-methylbenzenesulfonic acid, phenol and formaldehyde), are synthesized from sulfanilic acid, p-methylbenzenesulfonic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, phenol andformaldehyde. Then, the experiment synthesis parameters are also optimized with the single factor method, which includes the factors of monomer ratio, pH value, sulfonyl/phenol ratio and formaldehyde dosage. Meanwhile, the analysis of infra-red spectrum for the three products shows each one has its expected functional groups and the products also have some certain thermal stability. The temperature tolerance tests for the three quaternary polymerization loss control agents indicate that PF-1can function well under the temperature of190Celsius degree and PF-2can only work well under the temperature of170Celsius degree. However, PF-3still has the ability of loss control in water-based drilling fluid under the temperature of200Celsius degree with API test condition; The salt tolerance tests demonstrates that the three agents have the salt tolerance ability to some extent; The compatible and rheological tests also show good results.with the goal of minimal API water loss value, the optimal sulfonation degree and the amount of adsorbed groups are investigated under different temperatures and salinity. The results are that the optimal sulfonation degree and the amount of adsorbed groups differ from different temperature or salinity. The low or high sulfonation degree and the amount of adsorbed groups would produce negative effect on loss control, there would be optimal value for them which can minimize the water loss. With the Zeta potential tests and SEM scan technology, the mechanisms of loss control with this novel additive for water-based drilling fluid are figured out with some corresponding theories.
