With the development of oilfields, there are more depot engineering construction projects. The management of engineering construction project cost of oilfields is becoming more and more demanding. The large oilfields of our country have entered into the sustainable development periods, this will need us to take more focus on details, technologies and cost. It is also necessary for the depot engineering construction projects of oilfields to focus on details, and to study the role of management of the material cost. The MRP is a material management method of researching on lots and batches of material purchasing, which is focused on details and based on computer technologies, it can assist managing the enterprise, help enterprise managers to have access to the information of material level timely, and reduce the enterprise cost.The paper expounds the oilfields’ construction condition of the depot engineering construction projects, the management of materials and the structure of cost, emphatically expounds the problems existing in the depot engineering construction projects of oilfields, and illustrates the role of material management on reducing the cost.Taking Daqing oilfield as an example, analyzing the cost structure of depot engineering construction projects of Daqing oilfield, we can conclude that the major factors influencing the cost is the project schedule. The level of materials management methods will greatly affect the project schedule. The paper, from the perspective of improving materials management methods, puts forward the methods for reducing the cost of depot engineering construction projects, which includes strengthening material management, establishing partnership with suppliers, using the material management method to analysis material management plans of Daqing oilfield, making the plans of the material management for material demands, taking the engineering construction of oily sewage station of ternary south 4-8 as an example, and expounding the material management in practical application in engineering.
