The technology of sidetrack horizontal well which fully re-exploits those abandoned wells in the oil fields has become a main technical method for significantly improving oil and gas recovery, reducing the overall cost of oil and gas production, reaching a total maximum utilization of oil and gas reserves and increasing oil and gas productivity by potential tapping. It has played an important role in prolonging the production lives of oil and gas wells, reducing production cost, rationalizing well patterns and improving development effect of the old oil fields. Now, this technology has been paid more and more worldwide attention at a later stage in oil fields’ development. After 30 years of development, Zhetybai Oil Field now is confronted with serious problems of high water content during production(66% average) and low single well production(6t average), therefore, after introducing and popularizing the technology of sidetrack horizontal well in Zhetybai Oil Field, with its technical advantages such as inhibiting water content, reducing production pressure differential and increasing well productivity, it helps Zhetybai Oil Field ameliorate its development effect by tapping production potential of shut-down wells, casing damaged wells, stripper wells and high water cut wells, and also by improving old wells’ utilization, reserves producing degree and oil recovery rate.For this article, firstly we had a close study of reservoir’s geological characteristics and each layer’s injection-production performance and production state of Zhetybai Oil Field, then, combining with analysis of the present status of each layer’s production performance and remaining oil reserves, we focused on the main production layer and chose the most favorable well to be the target well to sidetrack for potential tapping, and, according to the target well’s specific situation, we made a detailed design including horizontal section length and target altitudes of target A and target B respectively. After the successful application of sidetrack horizontal well technology in Zhetybai Oil Field, which shows a practical significance for improving oil and gas productivity and reducing production cost in Zhetybai Oil Field, we conclude that the technology of sidetrack horizontal well is the most effective method for increasing production, and we propose to make further promotion and application of this technology in other oil fields of MMG.
