In 1998, as a scholar of Ecological Marxism, James· O’Connor who comes from the United States, published the book named Natural Causes:Essays in Ecological Marxism. In this book, he proposed the second contradiction theory of capitalism and the ideology of Ecological Marxism, which immediately attracted the attention of scholars both at home and abroad.By connecting natural and historical materialism, O’Connor states that Marxist theory exist theoretical vacuum, and explores theoretical source to the ecological environment problems on the slide. He rebuilds the concept of natural, attempts to give the connotation of history and culture. With the concept of nature and culture to transform the theory of productivity and productive relations, he re-interprets the relationship among nature, culture and social labor, in order to rebuild historical materialism. At the same time, he makes a further study of systematic ideal in Ecological Marxism——the generated possibility of the ecological socialism, and puts forward his own theory.James ·O’Connor is the representative figure of Ecological Marxism, many of his ideas are embodied in his works. Natural Causes embraces his main idea, so we analyze the content of the book is helpful to understand O’Connor’s Ecological Marxism thought. This book elaborates the relationship of nature, capitalism and socialism, and draws the outline of the idealized relationship between human and nature.The significance to study O’Connor’s Ecological Marxism is to change the distorted relationship between human and nature, to make harmonious coexistence between them, to explore the future trend of Ecological Marxism. At the same time, we can also realize the insufficient of O’Connor’s thought, and create a more comprehensive and impeccable thought of Ecological Marxism.
