In recent years, the number of tailing dam is increasing in our country. The safety problem overall is still serious. Tailing dam accidents have occurred from time to time, producing a huge threat to the local economy, environment and safety of people’s life and property. Related statistics show that, the insufficient discharge capacity of the drainage system or drainage failure is the main cause of tailing dam accident. The current domestic and international researches on tailings are more concentrated in the environmental protection, the stability of dam and seepage and so on, while less researches on drainage system. Based on the background of a tailing drainage system in Hebei province, an undistorted hydraulic model test and numerical simulation are used to study its flow capacity and flow pattern, and the research results will provide a reference for the design and management from related departments.Hydraulic model test is a kind of experimental technique. It is used to recur the flow similar to that of the prototype and study various hydraulic problems of hydraulic structures in the model which is lessened in a certain scale. In this thesis, a undistorted model test is designed in accordance with the gravity similarity criteria. The main contents of the experiment as follow:(1) Determine an appropriate sealing height of the arch board of drainage well to meet the return quantity concentrator required.(2) Measure the discharge flow of drainage system; determine whether the required maximum discharge flow can pass through it or not.(3) Observe the flow patterns in the system under the flood conditions and normal operating conditions respectively to determine the existence of bad flow patterns, and discuss the position and the potential harm of bad flow patterns.(4) Measure each flow velocity of the drainage system, estimating the erosion damage to the boundary of the drainage system.Compared with the hydraulic model test, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method has the advantages of low cost, high efficient, comprehensive data, wide application and so on. It is developed rapidly in recent years and is applied to the practical engineering. At present, CFD is not widely used in the study and design of tailing dam drainage system. The main fluid control equations, the discretization method, boundary conditions and the free surface simulation technology of CFD are elaborated in the thesis. And based on the hydraulic model test, a three-dimensional numerical model which can reflect the character parts of tailing’s drainage system is set up to simulate its flow patterns. By comparison, the calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, so the application of CFD in the tailing drainage system is feasible.
