In this paper, the surface of magnesium hydroxide was modified by stearic acid using the dry process method. The modified magnesium hydroxide was characterized by a scanning electron microscope, a thermogravimetric analysis, a differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The modification mechanism was discussed. The interaction among technological conditions was studied by Response Surface Methodology and Factorial Analysis.1. The results indicated that the optimum technological conditions were as follows: SA dosage was 1.25 wt. %, temperature 70 °C, time 10 min and a stirring rate 2000 rpm. Both dispersion and hydrophobicity of modified MH were remarkably improved, an esterification reaction occurred between SA and MH.2. The activation index of modified MH was analyzed by Response Surface Methodology. The results indicated that the interaction was only existed between temperature and time. On the other hand, the analysis of oil absorbing rate showed that there was an interaction between any two factors.3. The activation index of products was analyzed by Factorial analysis. The results showed that there was no interaction among the four factors. The analysis of oil absorbing rate showed that there was an interaction between not only dosage of stearic acid and time, but also stearic acid and stirring rate. The results of carbon content indicated that the interaction was only existed between dosage of stearic acid and temperature.
