As the important force components of containers, heads are widely used in railway, petroleum chemical industry, pressure vessel, nuclear industry and food processing industry and so on. The heads quality plays an important role in the safety of equipment operation. The major technical process is to stamp the tailor-welded blank many times. Based on the production practice it was found that the forming process parameters are important to the heads forming quality. Lots of research and practical data show that the main failure forms including wrinkling, swelling, thickness nonuniformity and springback deformation. In terms of the elliptical heads stamping defects, most research just analysis them from the single factors. But there is a coupling relationship among these defects. Based on the instability mode in the forming process of heads, the optimizing scheme of forming process was aimed at the problems of wrinkling, swelling, thickness nonuniformity and springback deformation during the production of heads parts in a certain factory. Its optimizing purpose was to reduce the swelling, enlarge the uniform region of thickness and decrease the springback deformation. Adopting the clearance between punch and die, the matrix radius, the height of drawbead and the relative position of drawbead as optimizing factors, a second-order response surface model with three objective values was obtained by fitting modelling analysis conducted by the combination of the softwares of matlab and design-expert. The accuracy of response surface model was verified, and the error margin was less than 7.4% which was available for subsequent optimizations. The actual production results show that heads with good surface finish, small shape error and high dimension precision can be obtained when the clearance between punch and die is 10.7mm, the matrix radius is 43.43 mm, the height of drawbead is 43.12 mm and the relative position of drawbead is 0.47. In view of the failure forms of the die this article was to explore the effective ways of improving the service life of the stamping die. Based on the combination of the die fatigue life prediction with the finite element simulation, the finite element simulation software was used to analysis the die wear failure, thus providing the theoretical guidance of improving the die service life. And the influence laws of surface wear by respectively process parameters were obtained that was available for actual production.
