With the continuous improvement of people’s health awareness, massage has been more popular than before, and the demand for electric massage chairs is gradually increasing. The domestic research and development of massage chairs started more lately than foreign countries, so the number of products which has the independent intellectual property is small and most of them have the shortcomings that they either just have the single massage function or have the ineffective massage effects.The design of the mechanical devices is the core content of the research and development of a massage chair. In this paper, combined with ergonomics and traditional Chinese massage theory, the author designed a mechanical device of a new massage chair, then ran the kinematics simulation、dynamics simulation and mechanical properties analysis on the model, and finally made some new prototypes and test them. The satisfactory results were obtained. The designed product makes up the company’s blank on its own massage chairs. That’s will make sense on the business transformation and upgrading of the company. It will also benefit to improving the market competitiveness. The main work and results are as follows:(1) This paper describes the background and significance of the study. Comparing the history and current research on the massage chair between domestic and foreign companies, it analyzes the domestic shortage on the mechanical devices of massage chairs.(2) According to the ergonomics and traditional Chinese massage theory, this paper confirms the design requirements of the mechanical device and divides it as the three functional elements by principle analysis. Designing a variety of mechanisms of each functional element to compare and choosing the best one. Establishing the three-dimensional model by structure design finally.(3) By using the ADAMS software, it takes the kinematics and dynamics simulation of the mechanical device to verify the functions of the structure. Aiming at the shortage of anti-dumping of the structure, it improves the structure and gains the satisfied result. According to the simulation results, it confirms the main parameters of the electric putters and provides the important theoretical basis for the choosing of the motors.(4) By using the ANSYS Workbench software, it analyzes the mechanical properties of the key components and checks the strength、stiffness and fatigue life of the structure. Topology optimization design is done on the frame of the seat and 8.7% of the materials are saved. Aiming at the shortage of the lifting bar of the footrest, it improves the designing parameters and obtains the satisfied result.(5) Completing the prototypes and debugging them. According to the testing standards, testing these prototypes and gaining the testing reports. The debugging and testing results verify the reliability of these simulations from the objective view. That’s will shorten the research cycle and reduce the development costs.
