Through the organic modification of montmorillonite to get the organic clay,it can be better dispersed in organic solvent to form gel structure, has several excellent properties of adsorption, thixotropy, etc, and because of its chemical stability and it has been used in many industries, such as environmental engineering, metallurgy, chemical, etc. The organic clay can form the space grid structure in the oil-based drilling fluids, it can tackify the system, improve the shear and lower the filter loss. It is indispensable to the oil-base drilling fluid additives.With the deep wells, complex wells and offshore wells,and the development of the oil-based drilling fluids, the oil-based drilling fluids systems are used more and more widely, such as diesel oil-based drilling fluids, white oil-based drilling fluids, biodiesel base-based drilling fluids, etc. Although the amount of organic clay products for the oil-base drilling fluids is very large, but the pertinence of every kind of product which apply to different kinds of oil-base drilling fluids is not so strong, and the product structure is relatively single. This article embarks from the mechanism of organic modified montmorillonite, in view of the montmorillonite on the absorption ability of the different modifier, studies the organic clay, which is suitable for different oil-base drilling fluids, optimizes the modification methods of organic soil, optimizes the applicable to different base oil modifier, optimizes the applicable to different base oil of oil-base drilling fluid with organic clay.Experiments use diesel oil, white oil, biodiesel, these three kinds of commonly used currently oil-base drilling fluids’ base oil as medium, compares the properties of the organic clay, which use the sodium carbonate and lithium carbonate as inorganic modifier; comparative evaluates the different modifier modified montmorillonite and applicable to the properties of base oil. Developes new methods that to use double tenth eight alkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride modified lithium base montmorillonite. The organic clay made through this method is suitable for high density oil-based drilling fluids system, possesses the aESantages of low viscosity, low fluid loss amount, and the method is simple.
