With the coal exploitation in China, the strategy of coal mining will focus on west district in the future.The northwest district has abundant coal resource, sample geological conditions. These merits make it easy for high intensity mining. However,due to the prairie, desert and Gobi in west zone, it is difficult to restore and control vegetation. At the precondition of protecting the environment and mining effectively in the mining zone, it’s useful to do the study of failure character of overlying strata and the earth’s surface under high intensity mining.Based on Halagou coal mine of Shendong mining area, the roof strata failure characteristics under high intensity mining was further studied in this paper by theoretical analysis, pressure observation in field and analog simulation experiment. At the same time, through building surface movement observation station and analog simulation, surface failure characteristics of shallow buried with high intensity mining and its formation mechanism, and surface movement angle parameters were analyzed,too. The main results show that: 1) 2-2 coal seam roof of Halagou coal mine was multilayer key strata structure; 2) First weighting strength and step, periodic weighting strength and step of NO.22407 working face was obtained; 3) The failure characteristics of 2-2 coal seam roof was only exist the "two belts", besides, it is easy to cutting roof falling damage with integrity and high angle; 4) The surface failure of shallow depth of burial was fierce; surface movement angle parameters were large; the surface discontinuous deformation was mainly about cracks, and the formation mechanism and characteristics of the cracks were analyzed. The research achievements of this paper can guide 2-2 coal seam mining in Shendong minging area, at the same time, it also can provide the evidence for protection of preserve coal pillar and management of ecological environment.
